Empowerment Program for Female Students: Ensuring Safety and Confidence
In today’s world, there has been a surge in incidents of violence against women. Female students are also falling prey to physical assaults by anti-social elements in our society. To defend themselves against such threats from miscreants, it is essential that we train our female students with self-defence skills. The main motto behind imparting such training to our female students is to get them prepared, both physically and mentally, so that they can ward off any danger arising from violence directed towards them.
Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya has taken a proactive step towards empowering our female students by collaborating with Jalpaiguri District Wushu Association (JDWA). Wushu is a form of martial art, and is also an international sport. It is recognised by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India.
The objectives of this collaboration are:
- To equip students with the ability to defend themselves against various forms of physical assault.
- To foster self-confidence of the female students so that they can face dangerous situations without fear.
- To increase their physical fitness which will contribute to their overall well-being.
- To encourage them to build a career in Wushu.
- To empower them in all facets of their lives.
Starting in 2021, Wushu classes are conducted by JDWA in the college in batches, with each batch comprising ten girls. The training duration for each group is 2 weeks. Successful participants receive certificates from the college, and the chief instructor is a 2nd DAN Black Belt.
The enthusiasm among the girls attending the classes is quite evident. The training has not only boosted their confidence, but has also equipped them with self-defence techniques that will help them to overcome all odds in life, however inexorable those may be.
In a commitment to inclusivity, the college has opted to offer this course free of charge, ensuring the participation of students from diverse economic backgrounds.
