About The College

Established on 13th June 2007, Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya began as a Grants-in-aid State Government-aided college affiliated with the University of North Bengal. Its humble beginnings took root at Bani Mandir Madhyamik Shiksha Kendra in Dewanhat, supported by the local community’s cooperation and financial assistance. Dr. Susanta Kumar Chatterjee assumed the role of the first Principal in 2008.

Recently, the college intInitially offering courses in Bengali, Sanskrit, English, History, and Political Science as Elective Subjects, the college steadily expanded its academic footprint. Eventually, it relocated to its present site in South Nababganj, Balashi at Dewanhat, under Cooch Behar-I Block, amidst serene natural surroundings. The new college building now comprises two two-storied structures housing twelve classrooms, a Geography laboratory, a hall, virtual classrooms, library, and administrative sections.

The college’s growth trajectory included the formation of its first Governing Body in 2011 under the leadership of Sri Rabindranath Ghosh. It witnessed significant milestones such as the appointment of non-teaching staff in 2008 and the addition of four Permanent Teachers in 2010. Currently affiliated with Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University, Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya offers undergraduate Honours and Program courses in Humanities across eight subjects: Bengali, Sanskrit, English, History, Political Science, Geography, Philosophy, and Education.

Recently, the college introduced the 4-year Undergraduate Programme under the NCCF (New Curriculum and Credit Framework) in 2022. The faculty comprises ten Permanent Teachers and one Librarian in substantive posts, along with eleven State-Aided College Teachers (SACTs), dedicated to delivering quality education. Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya also extends opportunities for post-graduate courses through Distance Learning Programmes under Netaji Subhas Open University, catering to students in the surrounding areas.


Celebrating fifteen years of academic excellence, Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya strives to evolve into a premier institution of higher education, particularly for first-generation learners, aiming to nurture self-reliant individuals. The college provides a conducive learning environment and actively serves the community through extension activities conducted by its two NSS Units in adjacent villages.

The college takes pride in the accomplishments of its alumni, who have excelled in their professional lives and contributed significantly to society. Situated in a remote part of West Bengal, Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya remains committed to its vision of academic excellence and societal welfare, shaping the future through education and empowerment.

About The College

Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya was established as a Grants-in-aid State Government-aided college on 13th June 2007, being affiliated with the University of North Bengal. The college was initially started at Bani Mandir Madhyamik Shiksha Kendra, a local school in Dewanhat with the active cooperation and financial assistance of the local community. Dr Susanta Kumar Chatterjee took over as the first Principal of the college in the year 2008. At first, the college had affiliation to teach five subjects, viz Bengali, Sanskrit, English, History and Political Science as Elective Subjects. In due course of time, the college was shifted to its current location in the village of South Nababganj, Balashi at Dewanhat, G.P. Dewanhat under the Block, Cooch Behar-I where the new college building was constructed amidst pristine natural surroundings.

The college had its first Governing Body formed in the year 2011 under the Presidentship of Sri Rabindranath Ghosh after the appointment of one Non-Teaching Staff in 2008 and four Permanent Teachers in 2010. At present the college has two two-storied buildings which house twelve classrooms, Geography laboratory, hall, virtual classroom, library and administrative sections. About 1200 students’ study in our college which offers UG Honours and Program Courses in Humanities in eight subjects, viz Bengali, Sanskrit, English, History, Political Science, Geography, Philosophy and Education. The college is currently affiliated to Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University. Recently, the 4-year Under-graduate Programme under the NCCF (New Curriculum and Credit Framework), 2022 has been started in the college. The faculties of the college include ten Permanent Teachers and one Librarian in substantive posts as well as eleven State-Aided College Teachers (SACTs) who work tirelessly and diligently to provide quality education to the students.  The college also offers opportunities for pursuing Post-graduate courses through Distance Learning Programmes under Netaji Subhas Open University for the interested students of the surrounding areas.

We have completed fifteen years of our academic journey. We have been striving to evolve into a premier institution of higher education which aims to make our students, many of whom are first generation learners, into self-reliant individuals. Our goal is to nurture aspiring minds and foster the inherent talent of our students. The college offers a conducive atmosphere for learning and has been working for the greater interest of the society. With this objective in mind our two NSS Units have been conducting extension activities in the villages adjacent to the college.

We are pleased to say that our endeavours have borne fruitful results. Many of our students have excelled in their professional lives and have contributed to the betterment of the society. This is indeed a matter of great joy for an educational institution like ours which is situated in a remote part of an outlying district of West Bengal.
