Dept. of English

About The Department

The Department of English was established alongside the inception of the college in 2007. Initially, it commenced with a modest enrollment of English students and just one faculty member in its inaugural year, followed by another joining in 2010. From these humble beginnings, the department has steadily, if not dramatically, expanded its reach and impact. Today the department has four permanent faculty members. The total intake capacity in Semester I has been increased to 100 after the introduction of NCCF.In line with the curriculum of Panchanan Burma University of Cooch Behar, studies in Bengali language and literature are offered in two similar sub-streams—Bangla Programme Courses and Honours. In fact, AE CC and LCC Bangla [MIL] are compulsory for all students irrespective of stream – Arts, Commerce and Science.

Teaching English presented a unique challenge, as many students hailed from backgrounds with limited exposure to the language. A significant portion were first-generation learners. Nonetheless, the department’s dedicated and enthusiastic teachers rose to the occasion, striving to impart both linguistic proficiency and a deep appreciation for English language and literature.

Over the years, the department has evolved in response to the advancements in science, technology, and the evolving needs of society. Despite facing hurdles stemming from inadequate infrastructure and human resources, it has adapted admirably, navigating the currents of change with success.

Though the journey has been fraught with difficulties, including the majority of students not meeting the expected language proficiency levels due to aforementioned constraints, the department has embraced these challenges as opportunities for growth. Efforts have been concentrated on nurturing students’ skills and interests in English language and literature, fostering an environment where latent talents can flourish.

Encouragement for active participation in various activities has always been a cornerstone of the department’s approach. Such engagements serve as platforms for students to showcase their inherent abilities and potentials, further enriching their academic journey.

Admission Procedure

Admission to Semester I of the B.A. First Year occurs annually between June and July, subsequent to the publication of Higher Secondary Results by various Boards. The admission procedure predominantly takes place online, adhering strictly to merit-based selection procedure in accordance with government regulations and the guidelines set by CBPBU.

Prospective students initiate their applications through the college website using the online platform. There are no application fees for courses offered by the Department. Following a thorough review of the Online Application Forms, Merit Lists are published, identifying eligible candidates for various courses. Subsequently, E-counselling Lists for admission to the Honours Course are sequentially released, based on seat availability. Notably, the college accommodates all applicants in the Programme Course under the CBCS curriculum due to overwhelming public demand.

During the E-counselling phase, physical presence of the students at the college is not necessary. Verification of documents of the admitted students take place when Semester I classes commence. The admission process ends with the Registration of admitted students to the university.

The admission process for the Sanskrit Honours Course under NEP in 2023 followed the same established procedure.

Throughout this process, the Department’s faculty actively participate in preparing the Merit List, E-counselling Lists, and verifying students’ documents. Additionally, they extend guidance to students, aiding in their choice of allied subjects.
