About The Department

The journey of Bengali department started from the beginning of the college. The Department of Bengali at Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya has been an integral part of the college since its inception in 2007. The department continues to teach both Honors and General courses at graduate level with success and satisfaction to all concerned. Currently, the department follows CBCS system of education under Panchanan Burma University, Cooch Behar.
In line with the curriculum of Panchanan Burma University of Cooch Behar, studies in Bengali language and literature are offered in two similar sub-streams—Bangla Programme Courses and Honours. In fact, AE CC and LCC Bangla [MIL] are compulsory for all students irrespective of stream – Arts, Commerce and Science.

Literature develops lasting values in students, such as honesty, compassion, loyalty and responsibility. Students of Bengali language and literature are given knowledge of Bengali grammar, history of Bengali literature. The texts that students explore provide multiple opportunities to discuss and reevaluate their own values and beliefs. These act as a compass in life as the students grow up. They develop a sense of individuality and creativity, as they develop their own opinions about the subjects in their texts, they learn to consider multiple perspectives and understand the complexity of human nature, and therein lies the value of the subject.

The success rate of the candidates is more or less satisfactory. The teaching-learning method of the department includes classroom lectures and seminars with active student participation. Occasional internal evaluations such as MCQs, Vivas, written class tests, and class presentations are held to assess student performance. Apart from academic activities the department organizes various programmes and encourages students to participate in many activities like various cultural programmes to encourage various soft skills. Every year we conduct Rabindra Jayanti, Nazrul Jayanti, Vidyasagar Birthday, International Mother Language Day, Agamonir Adda, Wall Magazine Publication, Spring Festival, New Admission Celebration, Reunion Festival, Education Tour etc.

A strong team of faculty members not only work tirelessly to spread knowledge among the young students but also work tirelessly for the growth and development of the youth. Opportunities are opened to them through classroom activities and extra-classroom activities that help them shine their talents, gather experience and develop their personalities.

Objectives of your Department:

The objectives of one of the oldest departments of Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya, Bengali Department, is to nurture the latent talent of students in Dewanhat and its surroundings, through inculcating in them the knowledge of their mother tongue. Mother tongue is life blood and students are taught to help them express their feelings in native language. The aim is to preserve the cultural backbone of Bengal by enlightening them about the rich literary treasure trove of Bengali language and by making them research-oriented, help them to contribute to the heritage of Bengali literature.

Vision:

Mission:

The mission is to make the students love society and be responsible for the country through moral education, imparted through readings of literary texts. That Bengali talents should be honoured on the global stage through numerous writings, research papers, is the dedicated aim of the department.

Why the Study of Bengali?

Courses Offered

Previously, the Department followed the Undergraduate Curriculum of the (1+1+1) System of North Bengal University. Presently the college is affiliated to CBPBU. Hence, the Department adheres to the Undergraduate Curriculum of this university.
The Department provides courses based on a semester system, which includes the following:
• 3-Year Honours and Programme Courses under CBCS Curriculum: currently pursued by 2nd & 3rd Year students
• 4-Year Honours Course as per NEP: currently pursued by 1st Year students.
This course has been initiated in 2023.
The syllabus for all these courses were framed and approved by the concerned Board of Studies (Undergraduate Level) of Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University.

Admission

Admission to Semester I of the B.A. First Year occurs annually between June and July, subsequent to the publication of Higher Secondary Results by various Boards. The admission procedure predominantly takes place online, adhering strictly to merit-based selection procedure in accordance with government regulations and the guidelines set by CBPBU.

Prospective students initiate their applications through the college website using the online platform. There are no application fees for courses offered by the Department. Following a thorough review of the Online Application Forms, Merit Lists are published, identifying eligible candidates for various courses. Subsequently, E-counselling Lists for admission to the Honours Course are sequentially released, based on seat availability. Notably, the college accommodates all applicants in the Programme Course under the CBCS curriculum due to overwhelming public demand.

During the E-counselling phase, physical presence of the students at the college is not necessary. Verification of documents of the admitted students take place when Semester I classes commence. The admission process ends with the Registration of admitted students to the university.

The admission process for the Sanskrit Honours Course under NEP in 2023 followed the same established procedure.

Throughout this process, the Department’s faculty actively participate in preparing the Merit List, E-counselling Lists, and verifying students’ documents. Additionally, they extend guidance to students, aiding in their choice of allied subjects.

Infrastructural Facilities

1.The department has a separate library for the benefit of the students, with a significant number of books being added every year.

2.The smart classroom, with digital projection system and touch-enabled smart-board is used for digitally enhanced teaching and learning practices.

Activities of the Department

  1. The department publishes a wall-magazine every year, which is planned, edited, and designed by the Bengali honours and general students.
  2. The students also participate in seminars and workshops organized by different institutions to be aware of the latest academic and technical issues related to Bengali literature.
  3. The department has also organized three national seminar on various aspects of Bengali literature and culture.
  4. Students participate in sports and cultural activities organized by the college.
