Through innovative practices such as student seminars, conferences, academic tours, heritage walks, cultural programmes etc our students are prodded to be inquisitive of Indian civilization values and passionate for its rich cultural heritage. The students are empowered to go beyond the conventional and simplistic reading of the past. We prioritize rich historiographical discussions on Indian civilization, nationalism, patriotism, communal politics, gender inequality, caste structure and varied social inequalities as well as issues in world history so that our students can link the many histories to current socio-political-economic trends.

This helps them to question mainstream discourses and make bold observations. Our alumni have diversified into different professions using their training in history. Our commitment is to mentor students to contribute towards new research, engage with historical debates and create new databases through interviews and field studies. Largely, the didactics of the discipline revolve around enthusiastic participation of the teachers and the taught, in realizing human potentiality for the benefit of the society as well as enrichment of the discipline by orienting students and faculty to engage in research on new themes and newer ways of doing History

The Department of History, Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya is a larger family. Here, a boy or a girl is admitted, and gradually, as a student, becomes a member of this family, remaining associated with us throughout their life. Alongside imparting established education, our teachers assist their students with profound sincerity and expertise. The members of the department discussions on history, contribute to foster a strong personality in students, instilling human values, social responsibilities, and fostering citizens dedicated to the welfare of the nation. Students study in the Department of History for a variety of reasons, which can be both personal and academics. Here are some common motivations:

  • The History Department aims to make the students aware of the past and its legacies through teaching, research and extension activities in Indian history in the context of Indian culture, history, traditional knowledge system and the world history. We believe that only a critical understanding of the past will enable the students to understand the present and help them look towards the future.

Course Offered for Under Graduate Courses:

  • As per guidelines of Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) is introduced in Under Graduate course of studies and examinations from the academic year 2017-2018 And        4-YEAR UNDER GRADUATE PROGRAM UNDER THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM AND CREDIT FRAMEWORK, 2022 is introduced from 2023 -2024 academic session.

Course Offered for Honours Course (CBCS):

  • As per guidelines of Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University an undergraduate degree with Honours in a subject may be awarded if a student completes –
  • 14 Core Courses (CC) in the Honours subject.
  • 4 Discipline Specific Elective Courses (DSE) from the Honours subject.
  • 4 Generic Elective Courses (GE) as offered by the college. GE must be different from Honours subject.
  • 2 Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC), namely (i) Modern Indian Language (MIL) i.e. Bengali / English (ii) Environmental Studies.
  • 2 Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) to provide value-based and / or skill-based knowledge. SEC will be the same as Honours subject.

Admission Procedure:

  • ADMISSION IS DONE IN THE COLLEGE BOTH IN HONOURS AND REGULAR PROGRAMME (CBCS- from the AY2016-17) and NCCF-23(From the AY 2023-24) STRICTLY THROUGH ON-LINE AS PER GOVT.RULES.
  • Eligibility to apply for Honours & Regular Programmes (as per Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University Regulations):
  • For CBCS Admission : A student may be admitted to B.A. three years Degree Course (Honours / Regular Programmes) after passing the Higher Secondary in the general stream conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education in (10 + 2) pattern after a period of 12 years of study or examinations conducted by Indian School Certificate (ISC) or Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) or any Other Board recognized as equivalent by the University provided he/she has passed in at least four subjects with English as Compulsory Subject, excluding Environmental Studies / Environmental Science / Environmental Education.
  • FOR HONOURS COURSE: Marks obtained in English + Marks obtained in the Subject opted for Honours + Best Marks of other two Subjects (Excluding the Subject opted for Honours and English).
  • FOR THE CANDIDATE DOES NOT HAVE SPECIFIC SUBJECT OPTED FOR HONOURS: Marks obtained in English + Best of other three subjects.
  • FOR PROGRAM COURSE: Marks obtained in English + Best of other three subjects.
  • To apply for Admission in Honours Programme in General Categories: 55% marks in the aggregate, or 50% marks in the aggregate with 60% marks in the subject opted for Honours in the qualifying examination.
  • To apply for Admission in Honours Programme in SC/ST Categories: 50% marks in the aggregate, or 45% marks in the aggregate with 60% marks in the subject opted for Honours in the qualifying examination.

4 Year Course UG Programme Under The NCCF 23 (From Ay 2023-24) :

For General & OBC (A/B)Categories:

  1. 55% in the Aggregate, or
  2.  50% Marks in the Aggregate with 60% Marks in the Subject opted for Honours in the Qualifying Examination.

For SC/ST Catagories:

  1. 50% Marks in the Aggregate, or
  2. 45% Marks in the Aggregate with 60% Marks in the Subject opted for Honours in the Qualifying Examination.

Academic Session 2024-25 Admission to all Major Course will be based strictly on merit. Merit shall be calculated as per the following formula Merit = (2S+T)/6. T = Aggregate = Marks obtained in English + marks obtained in the subject opted for Major + best marks of other two subjects [Excluding EVS, the subject opted for Major and English]. S= marks obtained in the subject opted for Major. If the candidate does not have the specific subject opted for the Major in his/ her previous course, the procedure for Merit Calculation will be as follows, Merit = T1/4 T1= marks obtained in English + best of other three Subjects.

Facilities of Our Department

  1. Two Class rooms available for students equipped with desk and board.
  2. Central Library for learning space and academic resources.
  3. INFLIBNET facility along with several research journals (printed).
  4. Common digital classroom.

Weakness of The Department

  • Lack of Infrastructure: Inadequate class rooms, departmental seminar rooms, departmental library, inadequate books, modern and digital equipment, materials required for modern education and research are lacking. Also, there is lack of sufficient number of faculty members to run the CBCS and 4 Years UG Programme NCCF course.

Challenged Face By The Department

  • Due to non-availability of other career-oriented and multi-disciplinary courses, the tendency of students to study general humanities is decreasing. As a result, students have become irregular in classes and their courses.
  • In many cases the students are motivated but the lack of infrastructure in the college discourages the students from taking up education.

Opportunities Of The Department :

  • The department regularly organizes departmental seminars, workshops, extension lectures, competition etc. for the progress of quality of the students and encouraging research-oriented mind-set among the students. Highly qualified teaching strength is also a significant aspect of this department.
  • Due to enthusiastic and loyal students of the department are taking part important role in the field of higher education in the district.
